You’re expecting. That’s exciting!
You’re likely thinking about baby names, baby gear, and getting the nursery ready. One thing many parents don’t realize early on is how important it is to plan for photos. If you wait too long, it might be harder to find a spot with a photographer you love.
This post will help you plan the best time to book your maternity and newborn sessions. I’ll also share a few helpful tips from my years as a photographer right here in Bradford, Ontario.
Quick story: When I had my first baby, I danced with him in my arms and cried. The song was “Don’t Blink.” Now, he’s 18. I’m so glad I have photos from back then. That time flew by.
Let’s talk about timing.
When to Book Your Maternity Session
The best time to book your maternity photos is when you’re between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant.
At that stage, your belly is round, but you can still move around without feeling too tired. That’s helpful for poses and outfits. You also likely feel more comfortable in your body than you might later in pregnancy.
If you’re having twins or showing early, we might want to do the session around 26 to 28 weeks. Twin bellies grow fast, and it’s smart to do photos a little earlier.
Book your spot during your second trimester. That way, you’ll have more choices for dates. Fall and early winter fill up fast, so planning ahead helps.
I help with outfit planning too, so you’ll look and feel your best.
When to Book Your Newborn Session
This might sound odd, but the best time to book your newborn session is before your baby is born. Ideally, book before you reach 30 weeks pregnant.
Newborn photos work best when babies are 5 to 21 days old. During that time, they’re still sleepy and easy to pose.
After three weeks, babies stay awake longer. That’s cute in real life, but it makes photo sessions harder.
Here’s how I handle bookings:
You book while pregnant
I save space around your due date
Once baby arrives, we pick the final day and time
That way, we’re ready no matter when baby shows up.
You don’t need to worry about finding a photographer while running on two hours of sleep.
Why Booking Early Helps
Less stress Once your spot is booked, that’s one less thing on your mind.
More options You get first pick for dates and times. That’s helpful during busy seasons.
Time to plan We’ll have time to talk about outfits, ideas, and sets. It’s more relaxed when you plan early.
What If You Miss the Ideal Window?
Don’t worry. It happens. Maybe baby came early. Maybe you didn’t feel well. Maybe life got busy.
I’ve worked with clients at 38 weeks and got lovely shots. We keep it simple, and I make sure you’re comfortable.
I’ve also taken newborn photos at 4–6 weeks. At that age, we may get more awake photos. But those can be sweet, too.
Just reach out. I’ll do what I can to make it work.

Tips From Me (Your Photographer)
Book both sessions together
This saves time and may save money, too.
Get ready for your maternity session
Drink water. Rest. Do something that makes you feel nice. Maybe paint your nails or pick an outfit that makes you feel pretty.
Don’t worry about how big your bump is
Everyone shows differently. I’ll guide you with poses that flatter your body.
Newborn sessions run warm
I keep the studio toasty. Feed your baby right before we start. That helps them sleep better during photos.
Let me know if anything changes
If your baby arrives early or late, just send me a message. We’ll adjust.
I have lots of tricks
Crying baby? I’ve got white noise, wraps, and lots of patience. Tired parents? I work fast and keep snacks nearby. Toddlers? I’ve got bubbles and silly songs.
